Look and feel the difference

The tech dummy in me used to worry that one day, the Blogger servers will suddenly die and my 2+ years of entries will just disappear down the internet wormhole (that was before I discovered that I could do backups of my entire website, including the pictures).

This irrational fear is still one of the key motivators for me to migrate my old blogspot site to this new one. Also, the feeling of having a domain of my own didn’t seem all that bad either. So I overcome all odds; my ignorance of web hosting, FTPs, customisation of template (with limited CSS knowledge), spent a couple of days finding out how to manage this online and finally came up with this new site. Also having successfully worked on another site (which will be revealed soon), I was feeling quite confident to do this revamp of my personal blog.

After spending about 3 days mucking around with my new domain in WordPress. I declare that WordPress is far more superior to Blogger. I cleared up all the confusion I was experiencing with WordPress.com and WordPress.org, and settled on the latter for more flexibity and expandability.

Now, I can even offer ‘consultation’ for anyone who have any plans to have their own domain and migrate their blogs. So who needs help for a more organised blog site?

    Amie, thanks for the compliments.

  2. Hi, great move, may I know from where you bought the domain name and the web hosting? Also, how much is it per month / year?

Shuey, I got the domain name and hosting from Blue Host. Quite a reliable web hosting company, no point getting any local company to do this for you, as they usually charge a premium. I only paid USD6.95 a year for my domain, hosting and unlimited space.

  3. Love your new stage! Looking forward to more charming antics of Kyle… :-)

    Thanks Jayne.

  4. Hi Rachel, thanks for dropping by my blog. Wow, you customise your blog template? You must be an IT expert! Btw, is wordpress.com more user friendly than blogspot?

Hi Serene, thanks for coming by. I am not an IT expert (I wish! :)), it took me lots of trial and error and I picked up simple tips from online web development sites. I use a basic layout, customise the colours, headers, widgets and icons. WordPress takes a while to get used to, vs blog spot. But it is so organised and there is so much more it can do for your site. U should give it a try!

  7. Tell me about it haha. I have the same fear too (of losing my precious 600-odd entries). It would even be better if everything can be compiled and printed in a book! For me, nothing beats having a hard-copy as backup. Oh yes, thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment on my blog :-)

Thanks for coming by Hwei Li. Someone should start introducing an affordable service to help moms like us to compile our blogs into books to be kept for precious memories, I am sure that there will be many out there who will want to do the same for their blogs :)

  8. Hey Rachel, I’d definitely want to create my own website with my own domain, like you, I too have the fear that one day the space in blogger runs out and I’m doomed all my years of blogging would come to a stand still :) So yeah, would definitely need to consult your expertise in doing the migration and all :)

  9. hi, I was looking at bluehost.com, but the sales person (live chat) told me USD 6.95 is per month, not per year. Which bluehost are you using indeed?

Sorry for my typo error. It is indeed 6.95 a month not per year..

  10. I love your new blog look! very refreshing!

And, since you offer to help any of us on the tips on migrating, for sure I’ll look for you, SOON. haha

Actually my another blog is of own domain and under WP (my scrapbooking blog). Still, I’m not quite used to WP. I’m aware WP is so much more advance than Blogspot but just don seems to get the hang of it…

For e.g. am trying for the longest time to hide the blog title with my own header with logo, just can’t get it. ended up remove the blog name so it won’t show up. i know, not wise as search engine not able to find my blog… headache.
