In the details – Shared Spaces

When I read about other people's interior styles on the internet, I start to think about my interior preferences.

10 years ago when hb and I had our first home, we were into dark coloured furnishing as we wanted to have a clean, minimalistic space. The choice of minimalistic furnishing was apt for our lifestyle at that point in time. After staying in a minimalistic home for some time, I realised how much I did not want to live in a cookie cutter space with lots of clultter, but lacked any form of personal touches in aesthetics. So moving into our new space, I wanted to add alot more of my simple touches into the corners of the home.

So what's my personal style for the home in general? I use a neutral base, mainly from our existing furniture that we bought from our first home. One base colour of dark brown wood furniture (all from our minimalist style 10 years ago), then accentuate with happy colours in shades of yellow, mustard, sage. And add a bit of whimsicalness to that, with my fondness for nature-inspired details. All seen through frame pictures, fabric prints and things that I make and plan to make myself.

I have alot more old stuff (some which are hand-me-downs vintage gems from my mom), hardly any new stuff. And I make a point to put away alot that I don't like in cabinets and drawers and only highlight those that I like, so that solves the clutter at home. I am also blessed to have a hb that surrenders to my preferences for the home and he seems quite satisfied with the overall result ;)

The challenge that I encountered with this space is that since this place is rented, I have to work with existing space and fittings. The apartment is relatively clean with little built-ins, except for wardrobes and the landlord's ugly speaker fixtures on the ceiling in the living area.

Imagine having to live with 4 of these eyesores on the ceiling for the next 2 years…

So this is what I did….with a $2 paper lantern from daiso, decoupage and some treasured pieces from my fabric collection.

My fondness for nature-inspired details is reflected in my choice of fabric for the lanterns and art prints, which are printed reproductions of original artwork by Etsy artists. All of these picture frames are from Ikea, that previously housed some of my photographic prints of nature from the nature walks that Kyle and I have taken,

I don't have green fingers, so I get easy to maintain, budget house plants from Ikea, so as to introduce more greenery into the living area.

For that bit of fun lighting into the living area, this 'home-made' lamp jar is the first thing I see when I enter the house from the main door. I used a $2 glass jar, christmas lights that I purchased 2 years ago and shells that Kyle collected from our resort holidays a while ago.

I am not one that follows interior trends, as I find that a home needs to reflect the personality of the people living there. Decorating a home takes time and it is important to allow our home to grow along with us and our needs. Most of all, decorating needs heart, it is best to follow one's passions and preferences, and not to simply copy whatever that is seen on the internet, or only select everything from a certain store. Afterall, what makes a house a home? It is all in the details you see, that will add warmth and your own personality into the space that you can call your own.

Space and routines

Finally managed to unpack the last of the boxes yesterday, somehow, the last leg of unpacking just seemed to have taken the longest time. Nonetheless,I am very satisfied with the outcome. Hb and I have successfully gotten rid of most of the clutter at home, and what are still useful and hardly used are now packed neatly into the built-in wardrobes. I really do hope that this signals a start of a clutter-free home :)

Was able to ease into a new routine of having breakfast at home, savouring a cup of Earl Grey tea and doing bible devotion at the same time. After walking Kyle to school and back, I have alot more time in the mornings enjoy some 'me-time' and more time to mess around with my hand-mades ;)

Here's one of the hand-mades I have completed for my bedroom; a bedisde table runner. in teal and off white. The good thing about hand-mades is that you can always create whatever you like for the home, even if there is no such thing as a bedside table runner. My inspiration behind this piece is a reminisce of the 80s geometric patterns, minus the neon shades. I was looking to bring out the monotony of the dark brown furnishing in the room and introduce some shapes and the snuggly feel of my favorite fabric; felt. Next to the bedisde table is my $60 second hand lamp. Still extremely pleased with the price and condition of it.

Will be working slowly but steadily on my handmades for the little corners in the house…more to come soon.

In the mood for some handmades

I have been bitten by the making-of-handmades 'bug' lately. Feeling more inspired than usual to start on plenty of projects.

It started off with the smallest softie that I have made so far at 4.5 inches, a birthday gift for my sister who is hard to shop for.

The little giraffe on Kyle's 'ba-ba' palms

This could likely be the start of the making of the menagerie of mini animal softies, will have to see how the handmade mood brings me to.

I have also recently completed a home aesthetic improvement project for a couple of awful-looking ceiling fixtures at my new home; I was enthusiastic to take it on as a challenge, as I believe that there is always something anyone can do to improve the aesthetics in a home, all it takes is that little bit of inventiveness and effort. Photos to come soon.

Happy Lunar New Year!

May the year 2011 brings lots of good health and blessings to you and your family!

Btw, Pauline and I are working on a collection of dolls and animal softies to be put up for sale soon. These softies will be lovingly hand-made and most will be wearing clothes from US designer fabrics. I am certain that any little girl will be thrilled to receive one of these softies ;) Do look out for it on myplayschool.net

Oh so addictive!

I recently discovered an area of handmade stuff that is so addictive; the making of softies.

There is something about wool felt used in softies that make it so tempting to touch. Softies are endearing in a way that they are imperfect with their wonky looking eyes or noses and features slightly off center. Plus they are a fabulous way for me to use some of my stash of fabrics.

This is pajama-wearing Brian, whose name has been given by Kyle.

Kyle wants a cat girl friend for him, he has even specified that she has to have yellow fur and wears a pink dress.

Meet Charlotte, the feline which tries to look a little more sophisticated.

It was my first attempt making a dress for a softie and I realised that I still need lots of practice.

Oh…you must see her shoes. The lace is from my mom's collection of vintage laces, hoarding fabrics apparently is in the genes.

More handmades done these last two weeks…

Was supposed to continue my Asian dollies project, but I realised I get easily bored with bigger projects. I like my hand-mades in bite-sizes like these, as I don't need to wait too long to see the finished product…so no quilts ever for me for sure.

Kyle’s World, My World

1. Kyle's World – "I don't want to share".

Learning how to share is a socio-emotional development that Kyle seems to be lagging in. I suppose it is a challenge for an only-child, especially when he does not need to share his toys most of the time at home.

This afternoon we had a conversation about sharing in school. It started with him telling me that he and his friend were the only two that cried in class today, as he got scolded by his teacher for snatching a toy from the latter. I reminded him that it was wrong to snatch from his friend and he had to share. And that the reality of life is that we don't always get what we want all the time, even when we ask nicely.

He still insisted for a while that "I don't want to share." I had to explain to him all about social norms and how one has to share to be a friend and to play with friends. Later he admitted to me that he didn't know how to share, and found sharing hard to do. We said a prayer together and ask God to help him to share with his friends and learn to be a kind and giving friend.

With time, I am sure sharing will get easier for him.

Homework, for the first time from school.

Dh was shocked to hear that Kyle has brought homework back from school. I wasn't surprised. Even for a school that learns through play, the principal probably felt that it was time to start introducing the concept of homework at Nursery. He needs to start somewhere, I guess.

2. My World

2010 was really a year that I focused alot on Kyle's home-learning and his development. Reviewing through the year, I realised that the closest thing that I did for myself was start up myplayschool.net with Pauline, sharing our knowledge and passion about home-learning with other moms. However, the nature of it is still rather Kyle focused, in the sense that it afterall revolved around what I was doing with him at home. Caught in the busy-ness of planning home-learning activities, I had little time to think about what else I wanted to do. I dabbled a little in photography, but really had no time to be out exploring other subjects apart from the boy.

Being 'kid-focused' is surely the role of every SAHM, but it does get a tad bit unhealthy when the mind is only occupied with 'what to teach, learn and activities to plan.' Besides true domestication happens only when the SAHM's obsession moves beyond the child and goes into either whipping up wondrous meals for the family (which I have yet to achieve), or being able to use the hand-made craft to beautify the house (I am on the way!).

Until I discovered the craft of sewing in end November. It started out with my fascination with felt, making felties for Christmas gifts and using felt for appliques. I realised that I could really enjoy doing this long term. I went on to explore embroidery, then got myself a sewing machine as I figured I needed a proper canvas for my appliques and embroidery. These 'canvases' came in a form of linen, my love for printed fabric, which were then put together to form wristlets, clutches and totes. Plus it helped that I had a sewing mentor, Pauline, who generously shared tips and tricks with me. So my learning curve wasn't too steep :)

From wool felt;

To an eclcetic mix of 60’s-70’s-inspired, modern conversationals and kitschy, whimsical woodland features, animals; owls, birds, deers, foxes, bunnies, monkeys, cats. I tried to group them in colours, but since there seem to be quite a variation in the styles and their shades, so this was my best attempt.

I tend to get a little 'gollum-like' with my fabrics. I can't bear to use some of my favorites ones and taking them every once in a while to admire them, so I have plans for more use of fabrics around the house. Starting with the table cloth, table liner, and a couple of sofa cushions. Sewing has been a really enjoyable hobby so far and there is so much I want to do. Pity I only have a pair of hands and limited time :(

Note : If you are one of those moms who are focused on nothing else except your child's development and intellectual development, go and get a hobby! Be it cooking, baking, drawing, photography, shopping, sewing, whatever. Your life will be more varied and u will not be overly obsessed over your child's development or his/her well-being. And if you write a blog, do give yourself and your readers more topics of interest to read about, apart from what your child has done, can do or what u plan to do with your child. Being a parent really shouldn't make you lose your individuality or not have time to pursue your passions.

Feeling felty

felt1

One small section of a felt/embroidery project that I have recently started, that took an abrupt hiatus when I was feeling groggy from fever these 3 days. Another 4 more parts to complete before this project can be wrapped up…and I have like 5-8 others that I have lined up to do next.

Realised that crafting bigger projects like this, is excellent to build up my perserverance, which I have little of.  Maybe I should take on more bite sized projects?  Regardless, this will be eventually completed, just have to focus my distractions (with the other projects) with whatever pockets of time I have when the boy takes his naps.

Christmas Craft Week

craftwk6

K is not a very enthusiastic fan of craft, so I was quite pleased to be able to get him to work on more Christmas crafts this week and make Christmas cards for the family. I highly suspect his enthusiasm is link to the medium that we use in craft, and usually anything with cutting, glue-ing and pasting will get his approval.

craftwk7

It has been a productive week for me on my hand-mades. I finally finished the Christmas gifts and this was the last of the appliques that I made for the kids this afternoon.

craftwk2

Here's the result of my attempt at making novelties with felt; fridge magnets. This was fun to do, however a little challenging as the parts were so tiny.

craftwk3

Embroidery projects for my totes. Been working on 3 totes concurrently for myself, a good way to practice before I plan to 'force' my hand-made bags as gifts on friends and family. And I think one can never have too many totes ;)

craftwk4

My first needle felted project for another bag for myself, a relatively raw attempt but I was pleasantly surprise how easy it was to do.

craftwk5

There are still half a dozen of K's t-shirts that I plan to work on to be felt-appliqued, but for now will be taking a break from appliques and work on my totes and bags. I am like this maniac when it comes to doing hand-made things as I can work on 4-5 items concurrently, sewing can be so addictive.

Working on these Christmas hand-mades finally put me in this Christmas mood, I am listening to Christmas songs while writing out this post. Here's one of K's and my favorite Christmas songs;

Here's wishing all friends a blessed and joyous Christmas. May you be filled with God's love and peace this season. Christmas is more than just parties, eating, drinking, meeting up with friends and family…remember, Jesus is the reason for Christmas! Blessed Christmas!

craftwk1

It is beginning to feel a little like Christmas

We have been pretty much homebound the last few weeks. The nights have been tough as the boy has been waking up so often, and I turn into a walking zombie the next day. I still cannot fathom why he can't sleep through the night, permanently.

We have also taken a break from home-learning the past few weeks and all K have been doing is play, play and play. We have also dabbled into some Christmas crafts on certain days to get into the mood for Christmas, and baking…Apple Pies have been regular feature on our desert selection at home.

bakensew1

bakensew2

K is always very enthusiastic to lend a helping hand whenever we make an apple pie. I think it is also the main reason why the apple pie never fails to taste extremely delicious for him ;)

As for the preparation for Christmas?

Christmas decorations at home to the minimum, the only thing 'Chrismassy' at this moment is the felt advent calendar that I have made for K (I am just not too thrilled about taking down Christmas decorations after the season ends). The prominent thing thing I have at home at this moment, are trails of fabric, felt and strands of threads around the house.

I finally started on working on some items with felt and made K his first 'toy'; beanbags!

bakensew3

And some felties that I have recently made for gifts for Christmas…

bakensew4

And a stripey little one that will be an applique on a t-shirt…

I really do need to step up on my handmade production of items. There's less than 12 days to Christmas!

Mad about sewing

I can't believe that I am actually saying this.

My latest obsession is sewing. I did crochet when I was in secondary school for a while, and the only thing I was crocheting back then were necklaces. For a long while I could not even sew a button on a shirt neatly, so I never quite dared to venture into the area of sewing…until I discovered felting. I am really intrigued by felt fabric, and I am not talking about the craft or acrylic felt that we get here from craft shops, rather wool felt, that I can only find online at this moment.

Felt is a medium that is very adaptable to create illustrative designs and lots of whimsical appliques. Apart from wool felt, I have discovered the no-sew method of Needle Felting and simple embroidery techniques. I have been gawking at the felting and embroidery books from Amazon Japan for the last one hour while online.

So there are so many things I plan to create leading up to Christmas. As mentioned, many people on my Christmas list will be stuck with my hand-made gifts. For a start, I tried making a felt clutch bag for myself and added some simple embroidery and embelishments. And I found out last night that my mom keeps a stash of beads at home, so I did not have to buy any.

Will be kept really busy the next couple of weeks working on more cutesy stuff like felties. And then on to more ambitious needle felting+embroidery projects after.

Sewing has been strangely addictive and therapeutic. And so far so good, the needle hasn't drawn any blood on my fingers yet.
